2005 PIT Highlights

2005 - ALLEGHENY COUNTY AIRPORT AUTHORITY HIGHLIGHTS FOR PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

  • New Airlines: Pittsburgh welcomed Southwest Airlines in May 2005. Other new low cost service was launched to Myrtle Beach by Hooters Air. Midwest Airlines added Kansas City, Mo. in August.
  • Increased Passengers: More people are flying in and out of Pittsburgh due to better fares and more choice. Origination traffic was up 10 percent in 2005.
  • A Better Baggage System: The country's largest, fully automated, in-line baggage system is at Pittsburgh International Airport. In 2005, the Airport Authority began operating the system resulting getting your bags faster and lowering airport costs
  • More Security: Four new lanes for security screenings opened at Pittsburgh International Airport, supplementing the Main Security Checkpoint’s seven lanes. The result – saving you time at the airport!
  • Better Detection: Trace Portals The Transportation Security Administration has deployed an explosives detection trace portal to the passenger security checkpoint at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Trace portals allow TSA to expand its capability to detect explosives in a more traveler friendly manner.
  • Saved the Military Bases: The Airport Authority played a big part in assisting the PIT-BRAC Task Force in presenting a successful strategy to save the 911th Airlift Wing from being closed by the U.S. Department of Defense's Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
  • Increased Parking – In 2005, parking at the airport is up about eight percent compared to 2004. Now with Southwest and other airlines offering low fares, the Airport Authority added 400 extended term parking spaces to be prepared to handle the increased demand from local flyers. A second expansion phase is planned for 2006 when another 700 spaces will be added.
  • In-line baggage system – In January 2005, the Airport Authority updated checked baggage screening at Pittsburgh International Airport. The new system means passengers are no longer required to carry checked bags to a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) explosive detection system (EDS). Now, airline ticket counter personnel will tag baggage and place it on the belt behind the counter while passengers proceed freely to the security checkpoint. TSA screeners operating the EDS equipment are located within the new 10,000 square foot screening room on the south end of the Landside Terminal. The upgrade saves passengers a lot of time in the check in process.
  • Flight Information Displays – New monitors and a new system for displaying flight information makes reading the flight information much easier, is more visibly appealing. The system was installed through out the airport with new locations above the security checkpoint.
  • New Website – Pittsburgh International Airport changed its cyberspace look. Just in time for the busy holiday season, a new www.FlyPittsburgh.com debuted and was easier to navigate. As part of the launch, www.FlyPittsburgh.com is offering a contest to win free airline tickets.
  • New Canopies – Passengers at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) now have safer, drier access from the baggage claim level of the airport to pick up their rental vehicles. Four canopies over the previously unsheltered garage entrances were completed in July, a project driven by the need to protect arriving passengers from the elements.
  • New Display Case – The south end of the Ticketing Level of the Landside Terminal now sports a new Pittsburgh International Airport display case completed this year. Rotating displays for area destinations will be featured beginning next year.
  • Escorts for Passengers: The Ambassadors Escort Program assists passengers arriving or departing from Pittsburgh International Airport who may need a little extra help locating their gate or navigating the airport. Through the Ambassador Escort Program, Ambassadors will meet the passenger and escort them through the airport making sure he or she gets on the correct flight or arrives and meets ground transportation.
  • TIMCO Aviation Services, Inc. announced on November 14 that it has selected Pittsburgh International Airport as the site for its new CFM56 engine center that will eventually employ approximately 200 people. The 75,000 square-foot center, scheduled to commence operations in early 2006, will offer off-wing maintenance, repair and overhaul services on CFM56-3 series engines, as well as on-wing support services for all CFM56 series engines.
  • Reopened Gates – In response to growing demand by the airlines, Pittsburgh International Airport reopened 11 gates at the end of B concourse. This move is made possible by the increased origination passenger traffic that has been growing at Pittsburgh International Airport since the beginning of the year.
  • AIRMALL Highlights
    • New stores have opened in the last year.
    • On landside, City of Bridges Café opened. It is a restaurant that caters to the meeters and greeters who come to the airport for pick up and drop off. It has a theme of Pittsburgh's bridges.
    • Express Spa opened in concourses A and B. This spa is different than your normal spa. It features high quality services customized to meet the needs of the air traveler. Pittsburgh International Airport was the first domestic airport Express spa opened in and they have been doing very well!
    • Quaker Steak and Lube opened on concourse A, another popular restaurant with the regionally recognized brand, adding the local flavor to the list of eateries at the AIRMALL.
    • In retail, a second Airport Wireless store opened on B Concourse.
    • Two Hudson Booksellers opened.
    • A Prestige Signatures shop opened and is selling Ladies accessories. It is a minority-owned enterprise.
    • Belongings opened in the Airside Core offering purses and accessories. It is a female-owned local enterprise.
    • The AIRMALL is still enjoying very high sales compared to other airport retail sales.
    • The average sale per passenger at Pittsburgh International Airport is nearly $13 compared to an average of $6 among US airports.
    • Pittsburgh International Airport is still highly acclaimed in the industry.
    • This year the Airport Revenue News, the leading trade journal for Airport Retail, recognized the AIRMALL at Pittsburgh International Airport with the best concession award among all airports worldwide. That's the highest award the journal offers.
    • This past year, the Greater Pittsburgh Convention and Visitors Bureau gave Pittsburgh International Airport the 2005 Award of Excellence at its annual meeting. It is the event's highest honor.
    • Pittsburgh International Airport was recently recognized by the Wall Street Journal in an article about high end shopping at Airports. The article compared Pittsburgh to airports in London, Hong Kong and Sydney.
