AIRTRAN AIRWAYS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS AT PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
PITTSBURGH, PA (December 13, 2010) – AirTran Airways celebrated ten years of service at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) today with an event for passengers at its gates. AirTran launched air service at Pittsburgh International Airport on December12, 2000. It was the first low cost carrier to come to Pittsburgh and is currently the 4th busiest airline at the airport.
“I wish to congratulate the employees and the leadership of AirTran Airways on this important milestone. This anniversary is a demonstration of AirTran’s continued commitment to the Pittsburgh region. Air travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport can thank AirTran for keeping fares competitive while providing quality air service with excellent passenger amenities,” stated Glenn R. Mahone, Chairman, Allegheny County Airport Authority.
AirTran’s entry into Pittsburgh a decade ago is one of the reasons fares at Pittsburgh International Airport are lower than the national average. The Allegheny County Airport Authority released a study in August 2007 emphasizing the impact of the Low Cost Carriers in Pittsburgh led by AirTran. According to the October 2010 Pittsburgh International Airport Traffic Report, AirTran was the fourth busiest airline in terms of passengers at the airport. AirTran has had 711,144 passengers through October, trailing only US Airways, Southwest and Delta. For the year AirTran’s traffic is up 34.8 percent, compared to the same time in 2009.
The gate celebration included cookies and giveaways to passengers. Airport wide, AirTran distributed $10 gift vouchers towards the purchase of a flight.
AirTran has 15 flights per day to Atlanta (four/day), Milwaukee (three/day), Orlando (three/day), Ft. Lauderdale (two/day), Ft. Myers (two/day) and Tampa (one/day). The airline employs 55 at Pittsburgh International Airport. AirTran also provides charter air service for Apple Vacations in Pittsburgh.
