Air Travelers Advisory: Screening Lanes Update At PIT

  • Alternate security checkpoint hours are modified to maximize passenger throughput

PITTSBURGH (September 19, 2012) – The passenger screening lanes at Pittsburgh International Airport will be undergoing some changes in the next week, the Allegheny County Airport Authority announced.

Effective September 25, the alternate screening lanes located outside of the ticketing level will change its morning hours to 4 to 8 a.m. and its afternoon hours to 2 to 6 p.m. daily. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is making the changes to enhance efficiency and improve throughput at the checkpoints.

“We know the alternate checkpoint is extremely popular with business travelers and frequent flyers,” said Brad Penrod, Executive Director/CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority. “So we’re happy that it will remain open during our busiest times of the day. Ultimately, we believe these changes will enhance the checkpoint process and improve the customer experience.”

“We are constantly monitoring the efficiency of the screening process. This adjustment will allow us to increase the throughput at the main checkpoint. It is vital to airport security that we are thorough and vigilant, but at the same time, we want to operate as effectively as possible for the traveling public,” stated Joe Terrell, TSA Federal Security Director for Western Pennsylvania.

The TSA operates two security checkpoints at PIT. The main checkpoint is located on the second floor of the landside terminal, while the entrance to the alternate security checkpoint is located on the commercial departure curb, ticketing level of the landside terminal.

The Airport Authority and TSA remind passengers to arrive 90 minutes to two hours prior to the scheduled departure of their flight.
