Pittsburgh International Airport May 2007 Passenger Traffic Report

PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MAY 2007 PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT

  • Traffic up nearly four percent
  • Nine airlines report increased traffic

PITTSBURGH, PA (July 12, 2007) – Passenger traffic grew by 3.7 percent in May 2007, compared to May 2006, at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) according to the May 2007 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Nine airlines reported increases, four of which showed gains of more than 20 percent.

May 2007 is the third month this year to show year-over-year passenger growth 905,392, 2007 vs. 872,778, 2006. January 2007 had a 2.8 percent increase over January 2006, and April 2007 had a 1.6 percent increase over April 2006. This is significant because in all of 2006, only two months indicated year-over-year positive passenger growth.

“For three out of five months this year, we have realized significant passenger growth. The positive story is that more passengers are flying from Pittsburgh International Airport and are taking advantage of the lower fares and more airline choices,” said Kent G. George, Executive Director, Allegheny County Airport Authority. “Fares at Pittsburgh International Airport have dropped below the national average ($142 PIT vs. $149 national average) based on the U.S. Department of Transportation figures. This is a major change from 2000 when our fares were significantly higher than the US average ($192 PIT vs. $157 national average). We anticipate continued growth of origination and destination traffic.”

Delta Air Lines reported 22.9 percent increase in passengers (77,917, May 2007 vs. 62,238, May 2006), a gain of more than 15,000 passengers. Southwest Airlines added more than 23,000 passengers for a 22.9 percent increase (125,778, May 2007 vs. 102,308, May 2006), while AirTran Airways gained almost 7,000 passengers (34,671, May 2007 vs. 27,821, May 2006) and USA 3000 Airlines showed a 20.9 percent increase (14,272, May 2007 vs. 11,806, May 2006).

Those four were followed by American Airlines, which increased 19.6 percent (42,600, May 2007 vs. 35,622, May 2006), Air Canada, which showed a 13.9 percent increase (3,747, May 2007 vs. 3,290, May 2006), Continental Airlines 10.9 percent increase (44,303, May 2007 vs. 39,947, May 2007), Midwest Connect 8.2 percent increase (8,837, May 2007 vs. 8,168, May 2006) and United 7.7 percent increase (62,556, May 2007 vs. 58,107, May 2006).

Those increases reported by those nine airlines outpaced the losses reported by US Airways, which showed a decrease of nearly 58,000 passengers for a 12.3 percent loss (414,351, May 2007 vs. 472,293, May 2006). Northwest (49,318/51,178; 3.6 percent) was the only other airline to report a decrease in traffic.

JetBlue Airways, which began service in June of 2006, reported 25,389 passengers for May 2007. Year-to-date totals show 101,709 passengers, which accounts for 2.54 percent of the total traffic. Myrtle Beach Direct Air which began service in March of 2007 had 1,653 passengers for the month. Airport-wide, year-to-date figures show traffic 0.9 percent ahead of last year’s pace (4,010,893/3,973,679; 0.9 percent).
