Republic Airlines Deal at Pittsburgh International Airport

Onorato and Airport Authority Officials Join Gov. Rendell to Announce Republic Airlines Deal at Pittsburgh International Airport

PITTSBURGH - Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Allegheny County Airport Authority Board Chairman Glenn Mahone joined Governor Ed Rendell today to announce an agreement with Republic Airlines to establish a new maintenance facility and flight crew base at Pittsburgh International Airport, creating as many as 140 new jobs by the end of this year.

``Our region`s qualified workforce and Pittsburgh International Airport`s excellent facilities are the major reasons we are announcing a new aircraft maintenance operation with Republic Airlines today,`` said Onorato. ``Job growth and economic development in the Airport corridor have been top priorities of my administration, and this is yet another example of Allegheny County and the Airport Authority working to overcome the uncertainty after US Airways` restructuring.``

Republic Airlines entered into a contract with the Airport Authority to lease Hangar #2, which totals more than 52,000 square feet. The company is also leasing 957 square feet of Airside Terminal space on the Mezzanine level for pilots and flights attendants who will be based here. Republic is already hiring personnel for both its maintenance and flight operations, and it estimated between 60-70 mechanics and 60-70 pilots and flight attendants will be employed at Pittsburgh International.

``The Airport Authority has worked aggressively and diligently to make this agreement a reality. Our business administration and properties team worked closely with Republic officials to make sure the company`s needs were met,`` said Mahone. ``It not only takes a great facility and an available workforce to make a deal, it takes business acumen, excellent negotiations and professional drive to see all aspects of the proposal advance. The Airport Authority brought these qualities to the forefront.``

Republic will perform round-the-clock maintenance on its growing fleet of ``Embraer 170`` regional jets, a 70-seat aircraft it operates for US Airways. Republic also provides service to Delta, American and United airlines. It is likely Republic will be performing maintenance for those airlines as well since all of them operate out of Pittsburgh International.

Pennsylvania is investing a total of $530,000 in the project. With help from the Allegheny County Department of Economic Development, Allegheny County Airport Authority, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, and Governor`s Action Team, Republic Airways will receive a financial package that includes a $150,000 Opportunity Grant, $100,000 in customized job training funds and $280,000 in job creation tax credits.
