  • AIRPORT AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES CONTEST TO WIN TICKETS AND HOTEL STAY AT ONE OF THE PALM BEACHES TOP RESORT PROPERTIES

PITTSBURGH, PA (February 14, 2013) – On Valentine’s Day, Southwest Airlines has nearly full flights to launch the daily nonstop Pittsburgh (PIT) to West Palm Beach (PBI) flights. The airline announced the flight last July and the launch of this seasonal service has been long awaited in the Pittsburgh region. The flight departs PIT at 6:55 am (arrives PBI 9:30) and departs PBI at 12:30 and arrives at PIT at 3:00 pm. Tickets can be booked at southwest.com.

The Allegheny County Airport Authority and Southwest Airlines are celebrating the new service – the first nonstop to the Palm Beaches since 2007. The Airport Authority, with support from the Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau, has launched a contest to win roundtrip airfare for two and a hotel stay at PGA National Resort & Spa. Southwest has contributed the tickets and PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens has sponsored the accommodations. The winner will also receive a VIP package experience, courtesy of the Palm Beach Kennel Club, a greyhound racing, poker, simulcast action and dining entertainment facility owned and operated by the Rooney Family.

Win West Palm Beach!Cookies were offered at the Southwest ticket counter at PIT for passengers checking in from 5:30 to 6:15 am, Thursday, February 14. Love songs were also be played on the airport’s baby grand piano by Bob Baron on the ticketing level from 6:00 to 8:00 am. At 2:30 pm, the Airport Authority will host a media event at the airside gate A3 when the first flight from West Palm Beach arrives.

“Our region’s travelers love to fly to southern Florida for Spring Break. This seasonal daily service from Pittsburgh to West Palm Beach will give travelers another competitive choice in making their travel plans. We are pleased to see that Southwest has added a new destination in Pittsburgh and hope to see even more options moving forward,” said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald.

“The Airport Authority is thrilled to be able to share in the announcement. Our customers have clamored for this flight to return. Southwest has agreed with us that the regional demand for this market is very strong,” said David Minnotte, Chairman, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

“This is a natural linkage in our growing network and we’re excited to build on our strong presence in both Pittsburgh and West Palm Beach,” said Mike Gillock, Southwest’s Station Leader in Pittsburgh. “To offer nonstop service on the route with Southwest’s Legendary Customer Service, including Bags Fly Free and No Change Fee Brand differences gives everyone something extra to LUV this Valentine’s Day!”

“The launch of the inaugural flight from Pittsburgh provides a great opportunity for our friends in Pennsylvania to experience The Palm Beaches,” said Palm Beach County Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Jorge Pesquera. “There is plenty of time to enjoy the exciting events of our destination's 'high season', such as world-class polo, renowned art and antique shows, and the Honda Classic, to name only a few, all taking place under the warm Florida sun."

Southwest Airlines will add a new destination in April. Daily nonstop flights to Houston Hobby (HOU) will begin April 14 and can be booked today at southwest.com. Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways currently operate 26 combined daily flights from Pittsburgh to Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Denver, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix and Tampa.
