PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PASSENGER TRAFFIC REPORT FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2009
- AIRTRAN UP 67 PERCENT FOR YEAR
PITTSBURGH, PA (March 13, 2009) – AirTran Airways reported a 44.5 percent increase in passengers in February 2009 compared to February 2008 at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.flypittsburgh.com) according to the February 2009 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority.
A total of 556,924 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in February 2009, a 12.7% decrease compared to February 2008 (556,924 in February 2009/637,863 in February 2008; 12.7% decrease).
“AirTran realized impressive gains due to adding additional flights to Florida. We applaud their success. In regards to the overall passenger declines, this is the local story that reflects what’s going on nationally as well as internationally,” said Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director/CEO, Allegheny County Airport Authority.
“The airlines have been cutting capacity over the last year due to the higher fuel costs. Now with this economy, the airlines are bracing for a serious drop in passenger demand. Some experts expect that 41 million fewer passengers will be flying this year. International airline passenger demand has already fallen by 5.9 percent in January according to the IATA,” explained Penrod.
“In Pittsburgh, we are seeking ways to keep reducing our costs so that our airlines can compete and operate under these adverse economic conditions. We are working on a program now that could realize a fee reduction,” Penrod added.
“Another value-added in Pittsburgh is that our fares continue to be significantly lower than the national average. That will have a positive impact even during times of uncertain demand,” Penrod said.
A total of three airlines posted increases in February 2009. In addition to AirTran Airways, Southwest (104,888/102,755; 2.1%) and American (31,526/31,244; 0.9%) reported gains.
