ACAA Opens Two Art Exhibitions For Visitors at PIT

PITTSBURGH, PA (October 5, 2009)—Passengers and visitors are enjoying two new art exhibitions, now open at Pittsburgh International Airport. The Allegheny County Airport Authority announced that the Warhol Museum and Mox Box Consulting were selected by an exhibition selection panel for Showcase G20, an exhibit for Pittsburgh Summit guests that remains on display through the end of the year.

"This is an exciting opportunity to promote our region’s art and culture. Both exhibits were thoughtfully prepared and were G20-focused. Pittsburgh International Airport is the front door to our region, and this project helps to make the facility welcoming to world leaders, international guests, and news media,” said Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato.

“An exhibition selection panel, which included members of airport staff and local arts administrators, reviewed each of the proposals. The Warhol and Mox Box proposals were selected because of the high quality of the artwork and their appeal to visitors and residents,” said Glenn R. Mahone, Chairman, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

The exhibitions were chosen by proposals submitted by 30 organizations and artists in response to a Request for Proposals developed by the Airport with assistance by the Office of Public Art, a program of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the City of Pittsburgh.

“It is exciting that the airport has embarked on a program for temporary art exhibitions. Visitors and residents who view the exhibitions will develop a greater appreciation for the talented artists and world-class arts organizations in the Pittsburgh region,” says Renee Piechocki, director of the Office of Public Art, and a member of the Airport’s Art Advisory Committee. “I hope the success of these exhibitions will result in greater opportunities for arts in the airport.”

At the airport, The Warhol, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, will show off 11 of Warhol's fine art prints and photographs of him throughout his life. The prints will include images of Queen Elizabeth II, Alexander the Great, Jimmy Carter, Italy's Mt. Vesuvius and Cologne Cathedral in Germany, and more. They will be exhibited along with two of Warhol’s wallpapers: Self-Portrait and Cow. Another aspect of the exhibition will be posters and publications from shows seen around the world in the past 15 years, including G-20 nations Australia, Japan, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Displays are in concourses C and D in the airside terminal.

“The broad selection of Warhol’s work presents an international point of view that will make an ideal welcome to the many dignitaries coming to Pittsburgh for September’s G-20 meeting and we are honored to have him be the focus of this exhibition,” said Eric Shiner, the Milton Fine Curator of Art for The Andy Warhol Museum.

Mox Box Consulting, a Pittsburgh-based arts management and consulting partnership, calls its exhibit Urbanic 2: Catalyzing a Regional Economic Renaissance. It features the art of ten Pittsburgh artists working in a variety of media, all with a uniquely visionary approach to community city life. This exhibit is located in display cases on the south end of the ticketing level of the landside terminal.

“Each artist’s immediate experience comes from living in Pittsburgh, and through abstracted form, the artists document where Pittsburgh has been and where it is going. Mox Box is pleased to be exhibiting at Pittsburgh International Airport because it further advances our mission to encourage artists whose work improves the quality of life for people in our communities,” said Nicole Capozzi, Owner, Box Heart Gallery, Mox Box Consulting. Artists include: Randie Snow, Donna Broderick, Keith Garubba, Tom Brunger and Megan Herwig.

Displays will remain through January 8, 2010. Images of both exhibits can be seen at
