New Tourism Display Unveiled in PIT's Baggage Claim

PITTSBURGH, PA (April 8, 2011)--Waiting for baggage at Pittsburgh International Airport is now more enjoyable and informative.

The Senator John Heinz History Center recently installed a kiosk in Pittsburgh International Airport’s baggage claim depicting the peopling of North America that highlights western Pennsylvania as the oldest documented site of human habitation on the continent.

Meadowcroft Rockshelter, located in Washington County, is a National Historic Landmark and features a massive 16,000-year-old rock overhang used by our earliest ancestors for shelter. The video display provides a glimpse into the lives of prehistoric hunters and gathers, including how these ancient people survived—from what they ate to the weapons they relied on every day.

“We’re pleased to partner with the Allegheny County Airport Authority to promote Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village through this educational video display. We hope visitors will take the opportunity to visit Meadowcroft, an international crown jewel located just 30 miles outside of Pittsburgh,” said Betty Arenth, Senior Vice President of the Heinz History Center.

The Allegheny County Airport Authority operates Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin. Promoting regional assets and tourism is an important initiative of the Airport Authority.
