Outbound Parkway West Closed this Weekend in Robinson

Pittsburghers planning to catch a plane or pick someone up from Pittsburgh International Airport need to plan ahead this weekend and allow extra time.

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists the outbound (westbound) lanes of the Parkway West (Route 22/30) will be closed to traffic this weekend, May 8-10, 2009, in Robinson and Collier townships, Allegheny County, weather permitting.

The full outbound closure will occur between the I-79 and Settlers Cabin interchanges beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday and will continue around-the-clock through Sunday morning, May 10. To minimize impacts on motorists traveling for the Mother’s Day holiday, PennDOT’s goal is to have the outbound Parkway West reopened by 10 a.m. on Sunday; however, inclement weather could delay the reopening if the necessary work cannot be completed. Outbound traffic will be detoured during the closure. Signs will be posted and police will help guide traffic. Approximately 30,000-35,000 vehicles use the outbound Parkway West on an average weekend day.

Posted Detour:

  • Outbound traffic will exit onto I-79
  • Take northbound I-79 (toward Erie)
  • Exit at the Route 60 (Steubenville Pike) interchange (Exit 60) toward Moon
  • Follow Route 60 north to (Parkway West) outbound (westbound) toward Pittsburgh International Airport

The ramps from northbound and southbound I-79 to the outbound Parkway West will also be closed. Ramp traffic will follow the posted detour above. Note: To avoid delays, thru-traffic on northbound I-79 should stay on the inside left lane between the Parkway West (Exit 59) and Crafton interchanges (Exit 60). The on-ramps from the Settlers Cabin interchange to the outbound Parkway West will remain open.

Because of the shortened timeframe for this weekend work, additional full outbound closures or around-the-clock lane closures the may be necessary. PennDOT will make that determination following this weekend’s work and additional information on the upcoming schedule will be released next week. The closures are necessary to replace bridge approach slabs, mill and resurface the Parkway West in the area between the Settlers Cabin and I-79 interchanges.

Motorists should be prepared for extensive delays, stop conditions and changing traffic patterns when traveling on the Parkway West. Allow extra time, plan accordingly, slow down and be safe. Alternate routes should be considered.

The work is part of the $67.5 million I-79 Parkway West “missing ramps” project. In addition to the two new ramps which opened to traffic in November 2008, extensive work is being done to the Parkway West to add an additional lane in both directions. The added lanes begin at the Campbells Run Road interchange and extend to the I-79 interchange for an approximate length of 1.6 miles. Upon completion of the project in late June 2009, there will be three lanes of traffic in both directions through the interchange. This will reduce congestion on the Parkway, increase merge safety and also increase overall driver safety.
